How to use Dom Loves Mary Calligraphy font flourishes

A few people have asked me to demonstrate how to use the Dom Loves Mary Calligraphy font flourishes.  So I made my very first screen recording! It only took 4 tries:)

I’ve uploaded it to my You Tube channel.  Hope it helps explain some things about the font and how the flourishes fit with the upper and lower case letters. Click on the link to view it.

Since this is the first of many tutorials that I’ll be making, I’d appreciate some feedback about what I did well and what I could do differently.

I really want to get better at this, so your comments would be greatly appreciated!

Yesterday, I talked about the workshop I attended with Barbara Close.  But I forgot to share the great gifts each attendee received.

They were handcrafted by Jeri Wright and Sherry Barber, Kaligrafos members  who put the workshop together.  They are both wonderful calligraphers and so creative and crafty.

Hand made sign, calligraphy sign, hand lettered sign, hand painted signThey made one of these for each of us and placed themt on the doors of our rooms.  ( It’s was a sleep over workshop:)

hand lettering, calligraphy sign, hand made place card holderThese smaller “Welcome”  signs were placed at each place at the table.

For both items, they used a combination of wood, wire, beads and paint and lovingly hand made each one.

It really added to the warm feeling of the weekend.

Thanks Jeri and Sherry!

Watercolor Techniques with Barbara Close

I’m always looking for ways to improve my lettering and design skills.  So when my local Dallas calligraphy guild, Kaligrafos, brought in Barbara Close for a Watercolor technique workshop, I signed up immediately!

Barbara is a fabulous teacher who introduced a variety of watercolor techniques that work well for lettering projects.  I was so ready for some fun after putting in so much work completing my Dom Loves Mary font.

I’ve included the results from my weekend of playing with Barbara!

The top pic is called “Layer by Layer”.

I was so inspired by the weekend activities that I even came up with original sayings!

Calligraphy, hand lettering, sayings in calligraphy, Debi Sementelli, Lettering Art Studio
“Life is a Container”

Each of the pieces involves several techniques using a combination of watercolor, embossing, stenciling and collage. The sayings were brush lettered in gouache paint.  They were inspired by the works in progress and actually added after the each piece had been completed.

Dom Loves Mary calligraphy font on Bridal Luncheon Invitation

I was thrilled to have the chance to play with my new “Dom Loves Mary” calligraphy font on this Bridal Luncheon invitation for a client of DFW Events!

I loved adding all the flourishes to the upper and lower case letters in the brides name.

The invitation, in hot pink and orange, was presented to the guests in a personalized champagne glass.

(For some reason the hot pink turned more purple in this post:)

Dom Loves Mary calligraphy font is launched!

Thanks to all for following the love story of my in-laws, Dominic and Mary Sementelli. I’m thrilled that my “Dom Loves Mary” calligraphy font, created in their memory, has finally been launched on Myfonts.com!

This week, I’ll be showing you some of the features of the font that I created specifically with weddings in mind.

Dom Loves Mary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

The first thing I want to highlight is the special package of 66 ADD ON words. Some of the projects these can be used for are: invitations, envelope addressing, programs, Bride and Groom signs, Thank you tags and note cards.

Dom Loves Mary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

Today, I’m going to show you the cool ways you can use it for envelope addressing.

Dom Loves Mary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

I included ” deliver to” and embellished titles ( Mr. and Mrs.( as seen above), Mr. Miss, Ms, Doctor, The Doctors ) to add a special touch to your envelopes.  In this sample, I used a combination of both the Dom Loves Mary SCRIPT CONTEXTUAL and TEXT fonts, as well as additional letter flourishes, that come in two sets of 72 each.

I had so much fun creating all the different options, I just couldn’t stop myself!

Dom Loves Mary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

This sample was created using mostly the SCRIPT fonts ( A combination of STYLISTIC and STANDARD) with just the city and state in the TEXT font along with added flourishes on some of the letters in the names. One of my favorites is the abbreviation for number (No.). I think it  looks really cool when used for Apartment numbers:)

More Show and Tell tomorrow!

DomLovesMary font: The Grandchildren

If you’ve been following the story of Dom loves Mary, we are at the part where grandchildren join the family.  If not, you can go back and read about Mary, Dom , their wedding ,reception , honeymoon, Babies Make Four and The Daughter they never had.

I remember two very specific things my father-in-law said to me during the course of my pregnancy and the birth of my first son.

I was due in late August and we were to visiting them in Erie around the July 4th holiday. So I was VERY pregnant.

Dom just kept looking at me, smiling with a sense of wonderful anticipation and telling me how “beautiful” I looked.

On August 31, 1987 when Nicolas Dominic Sementelli came into the world, Dom could not stop thanking me.

He was a man of few words, but the look in his eyes  said it all.

I had given him something that was beyond what he could describe.  He was now “Papa” to a beautiful baby boy.

The new “Nana and Papa” with Nicolas.

“Nana” was just as thrilled.  With his red hair, Nick resembled her late mother Jennie.  She would now have her own “brag book” to share with friends.

Nick and Papa taking their afternoon nap.

When we were at their house, they would take Nick for walks in the stroller and then he and Papa would take their spots in the yard for an afternoon nap.

Nick is still a great napper:)

Nick always wanted to join in with whatever Papa was doing.  He was his little “buddy”:)

Alexander joins the family.

Three years later, Alexander Dennis Sementelli came along and doubled our joy.

Nana and Papa would repeat the same sentiments they uttered with the birth of Nick, thanking me for adding this adorable new member to our family.

They spent holidays with us, doting on both Nick and Alex as well as ordinary times, just being with us in our every day lives. The hugs and kisses were always flowing. The sauce was always cooking.  And they were such a help in so many other ways to this tired Mom and Dad.

They attended soccer games, watched them swim at the pool, took them to feed the ducks at the park and pushed them on the swings.

All, ordinary moments for many grandparents.

And yet, with distance and perspective, I’ve seen the magic in those simple times.

The love and respect that was demonstrated by “Nana and Papa” are a part of my sons heritage that they show others daily.

They are loving, caring, compassionate, respectful, and hard working. They value family and friends above material things.

DomLovesMary font: The Daughter they never had

If you’ve been following the story of Dom loves Mary, we’re at the point when I enter the picture.  If not, you can go back and read about Mary, Dom, their wedding ,reception, honeymoon and Babies make four.

To start, you have to hear the story of how my husband and I were re-united eleven years after we had dated in high school.

It basically goes like this.

My mother-in-law happened to see my father at  Theresa’s  Italian deli in Erie, Pa.  She found out I was living in Dallas.

Since Michael had just been transferred to Dallas 6 months prior, she decided she needed to let him know “Debi Cantoni, that nice Italian, Catholic girl lives in Dallas!”.

Long story short, he called, we met for a drink ( at the “Magic Time Machine” restaurant- too perfect:)  and 1 and 1/2 years later we were married in the same church Dom and Mary, as well as my parents, had been married in.

On November 9, it will be 28 years!

Michael, Mary and Dom before our wedding.

They had been waiting for this day for 29 years.  Just as it was at their own wedding, the RSVP’s flew in and 375 guests were in attendance.

The four of us ready to attending a Sementelli family wedding.

I quickly became “the daughter they never had”.  Over the years, they continued to  brag about my art and calligraphy projects to anyone who would listen.  During our weekly Sunday phone calls, they wanted to know all the details about what I was doing.

They’d pick out small gifts for me during their stay in Florida.  When they came to visit us, Mary would take over cooking dinner every night and take care of laundry ( always on a Monday:) and cleaning.  Dom would go through our “fix it list” with the skills of the best handy man.

Mary and Dom at Michael’s 30th surprise party.

A year after we married, I threw Michael a surprise 30th birthday party on The Circle R Ranch in Flower Mound, Texas.

I knew the best gift I could give him, would be to have his parents there with us to celebrate.

So I flew them in as the additional “big surprise”.

At Christmas, they brought the holiday dinner with them on the plane.  Carefully packaged in Styrofoam, the precious hand made ravioli would be the featured entrée.

The aroma of pepperoni bread, the best cheeses, lunch meats and olives, would fill the area around their seats.  They brought the party with them.

And just thinking about the stuffed artichokes and breaded eggplant gets my mouth watering.

DomLovesMary font: And Babies make Four

If you’ve been following the story of Dom loves Mary, we are finally at the “And Babies make four”. If not, you can go back and read about Mary, Dom, their wedding ,receptionand honeymoon.

Today’s post: And Babies make Four

On September 16, 1955, Dom and Mary’s first son ( my husband) Michael arrived.   Since Mary was 30 when they married, they wasted no time completing their family with their second son, David, born in August of 1956.

Two children born in such a short term ( 13 months) are often known as “Italian twins”.

Mary would later tell me that being pregnant for most of that two year span, would cause some people ,who had only seen her occasionally, to stop and ask her “When are you going to have that baby?!”

Dom, the oldest of a 6 siblings, took easily to parenting.  He would spend the rest of his life being an easy going, loving, supportive , proud father.

Mary had a little less patience:)  But she too, gave her all to being a “boy mom”.  Together they shared the love and value of family that would be the basis for their lives.

Trips to the local  Erie Peninsula were a favorite outing.

They eventually moved into their small, modest home on a corner lot. There they celebrated birthdays, holidays, graduations, anniversaries and and every day life, sitting down together for a home cooked meal every night and pasta and sauce on Sundays.

There house was always full of family, friends and neighbors coming by for coffee, drinks, or an intense game of cards.

On most warm weather nights you’d find them sitting outside with any number of guests just “shooting the breeze”.  If the coffee pot was on, company was sure to follow.

They would remain in that same house for 35 years.

DomLovesMary font: The Honeymoon

Today, some pics from Dom and Mary on their honeymoon.

The newlyweds headed south to Miami, Florida.  I love the classic 1950’s suit Mary’s wearing in this picture.  She was always stylish and loved to dress up for every occasion with coordinated  jewelry, shoes and purse.

DomLovesMary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

This picture of Dom has special meaning.  He was a very “chill” guy.  When he retired, he would spend a lot of time taking naps outside in his lawn chair, often with his face covered to keep out the light.

Because they lived on a corner lot, this scene was easily viewed by passers by.  People he knew would honk and Dom, without taking the cover off his face, would raise his hand and wave.

He was like a “Sphinx” in the neighborhood 🙂

DomLovesMary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

There weren’t a lot of photos from their honeymoon.  This is the only shot I could find with both of them in the picture.  I love it because of the way Mary is jumping into the pool while Dom waits for her.  To me, it represents them “taking the plunge” in marriage.

DomLovesMary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

It might seem odd to post this picture with the top of Dom’s head cut off in the photo.  But it makes me giggle to see that even then, as it was throughout her life, Mary could never take a photo that included the person’s full head!

DomLovesMary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

Dom and Mary would  eventually make a routine, especially after Dom’s retirement from the Post Office, of spending the winter in Florida.  They’d come to Dallas to be with us at Christmas then head off to their escape from the cold returning to Erie around April.

Tomorrow: DomLovesMary font: And Babies makes Four.

DomLovesMary font: The Reception

If you’ve been following the story of Dom loves Mary, we are finally at the reception. If not, you can go back and read about Mary, Dom and their wedding.

The newlyweds and their Maid of Honor and Best Man greet guests at the reception.  The “receiving line” is an age old wedding custom that is not always a part of today’s events.

Some newlywed couples stand at the back of the church to receive their guests congratulations or go table by table to greet everyone at their reception.  But, often, in the case of a large number of attendees, this would take too much time and delay the reception from starting.

This was the case of Dom and Mary.   Mary’s family was in the Italian Deli business so they knew everyone in town.   Everyone loved this darling couple and were anxiously anticipating their union.  So no one turned down the chance to be at this lovely event. There were 400 guests at their wedding!

Here are some pics of the “place to be” on September 6, 1953.

The Bridal table. Lots of Chianti flowed in celebration of  the day:)

I call this the “cute cake picture”.  It reminds me of Dom’s sense of humor and the playfulness they had between them.

In future years, this played a big part in their every day life.

I love the silly story about Dom coming home after work.

Every day when he came home, Mary would hear the door close and say “Is that you Dom?”

And every day, he would reply, “No, it’s Joe.”

It’s was a little joke between the two of them.

Just one of the simple things that made their long lasting love so sweet.

Tomorrow’s post; DomLovesMary font: The Honeymoon.

I hope there are little fun things in your day today:)

Best,

Debi

DomLovesMary: The Wedding

My soon to be released “DomLovesMary” font was named in memory of my in-laws Dominic and Mary Sementelli.

In previous posts,  ( Mary and Dom )I talked about their individual personalities.

Today’s post is about their  beautiful wedding .

Dom and Mary take their vows

On September 6, 1953 Dominic Sementelli and Mary Arnone took their vows to become man and wife in St.Paul’s Catholic Church in Erie, Pennsylvania. This picture showcases her beautiful gown with lace inlets paired with a darling Juliet cap veil.

Her classic bouquet was all white with lillies and stephanotis.  Dom’s boutonniere featured the same small white flower.

As they left the church, the traditional custom of throwing rice was in full swing. Check out the young girl in the stripped dress to the left of Dom.  Classic 50’s.

As Dom helps his newlywed wife into the car, they briefly glance at the photographer.  The look of total contentment on their faces is so precious. This is one of the pictures that first inspired me to create a font named after them.
