If you’ve been following the story of Dom loves Mary, we are at the part where grandchildren join the family. If not, you can go back and read about Mary, Dom , their wedding ,reception , honeymoon, Babies Make Four and The Daughter they never had.
I remember two very specific things my father-in-law said to me during the course of my pregnancy and the birth of my first son.
I was due in late August and we were to visiting them in Erie around the July 4th holiday. So I was VERY pregnant.
Dom just kept looking at me, smiling with a sense of wonderful anticipation and telling me how “beautiful” I looked.
On August 31, 1987 when Nicolas Dominic Sementelli came into the world, Dom could not stop thanking me.
He was a man of few words, but the look in his eyes said it all.
I had given him something that was beyond what he could describe. He was now “Papa” to a beautiful baby boy.
- The new “Nana and Papa” with Nicolas.
“Nana” was just as thrilled. With his red hair, Nick resembled her late mother Jennie. She would now have her own “brag book” to share with friends.
- Nick and Papa taking their afternoon nap.
When we were at their house, they would take Nick for walks in the stroller and then he and Papa would take their spots in the yard for an afternoon nap.
Nick is still a great napper:)
- Papa and his little buddy.
Nick always wanted to join in with whatever Papa was doing. He was his little “buddy”:)
- Alexander joins the family.
Three years later, Alexander Dennis Sementelli came along and doubled our joy.
Nana and Papa would repeat the same sentiments they uttered with the birth of Nick, thanking me for adding this adorable new member to our family.
- Nick and Alex – Christmas 1992
- Alex and Nick- Halloween 1991
- Nick and Alex- Off to Preschool.
- Easter 1991
They spent holidays with us, doting on both Nick and Alex as well as ordinary times, just being with us in our every day lives. The hugs and kisses were always flowing. The sauce was always cooking. And they were such a help in so many other ways to this tired Mom and Dad.
- Riding the Monorail at the Dallas Zoo.
Trips to the Zoo were just one of the typical outings during their visit.
- Zoo outing
They attended soccer games, watched them swim at the pool, took them to feed the ducks at the park and pushed them on the swings.
All, ordinary moments for many grandparents.
And yet, with distance and perspective, I’ve seen the magic in those simple times.
The love and respect that was demonstrated by “Nana and Papa” are a part of my sons heritage that they show others daily.
- Nick and Alex with Nana- 2009
They are loving, caring, compassionate, respectful, and hard working. They value family and friends above material things.
They are Sementelli’s. And they do their Nana and Papa (and parents) proud.
