DomLovesMary font: The Honeymoon

Today, some pics from Dom and Mary on their honeymoon.

The newlyweds headed south to Miami, Florida.  I love the classic 1950’s suit Mary’s wearing in this picture.  She was always stylish and loved to dress up for every occasion with coordinated  jewelry, shoes and purse.

This picture of Dom has special meaning.  He was a very “chill” guy.  When he retired, he would spend a lot of time taking naps outside in his lawn chair, often with his face covered to keep out the light.

Because they lived on a corner lot, this scene was easily viewed by passers by.  People he knew would honk and Dom, without taking the cover off his face, would raise his hand and wave.

He was like a “Sphinx” in the neighborhood 🙂

There weren’t a lot of photos from their honeymoon.  This is the only shot I could find with both of them in the picture.  I love it because of the way Mary is jumping into the pool while Dom waits for her.  To me, it represents them “taking the plunge” in marriage.

DomLovesMary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

It might seem odd to post this picture with the top of Dom’s head cut off in the photo.  But it makes me giggle to see that even then, as it was throughout her life, Mary could never take a photo that included the person’s full head!

Dom and Mary would  eventually make a routine, especially after Dom’s retirement from the Post Office, of spending the winter in Florida.  They’d come to Dallas to be with us at Christmas then head off to their escape from the cold returning to Erie around April.

Tomorrow: DomLovesMary font: And Babies makes Four.

You didn’t think I would stop at the Honeymoon, did you?:)

DomLovesMary font: The Reception

If you’ve been following the story of Dom loves Mary, we are finally at the reception. If not, you can go back and read about Mary, Dom and their wedding.

The newlyweds and their Maid of Honor and Best Man greet guests at the reception.  The “receiving line” is an age old wedding custom that is not always a part of today’s events.

Some newlywed couples stand at the back of the church to receive their guests congratulations or go table by table to greet everyone at their reception.  But, often, in the case of a large number of attendees, this would take too much time and delay the reception from starting.

This was the case of Dom and Mary.   Mary’s family was in the Italian Deli business so they knew everyone in town.   Everyone loved this darling couple and were anxiously anticipating their union.  So no one turned down the chance to be at this lovely event. There were 400 guests at their wedding!

Here are some pics of the “place to be” on September 6, 1953.

The Bridal table. Lots of Chianti flowed in celebration of  the day:)

I call this the “cute cake picture”.  It reminds me of Dom’s sense of humor and the playfulness they had between them.

In future years, this played a big part in their every day life.

I love the silly story about Dom coming home after work.

Every day when he came home, Mary would hear the door close and say “Is that you Dom?”

And every day, he would reply, “No, it’s Joe.”

It’s was a little joke between the two of them.

Just one of the simple things that made their long lasting love so sweet.

Tomorrow’s post; DomLovesMary font: The Honeymoon.

I hope there are little fun things in your day today:)

Best,

Debi

DomLovesMary: The Wedding

My soon to be released “DomLovesMary” font was named in memory of my in-laws Dominic and Mary Sementelli.

In previous posts,  ( Mary and Dom )I talked about their individual personalities.

Today’s post is about their  beautiful wedding .

Dom and Mary take their vows

On September 6, 1953 Dominic Sementelli and Mary Arnone took their vows to become man and wife in St.Paul’s Catholic Church in Erie, Pennsylvania. This picture showcases her beautiful gown with lace inlets paired with a darling Juliet cap veil.

Her classic bouquet was all white with lillies and stephanotis.  Dom’s boutonniere featured the same small white flower.

Dom and Mary leave the church.

As they left the church, the traditional custom of throwing rice was in full swing. Check out the young girl in the stripped dress to the left of Dom.  Classic 50’s.

Dom and Mary getting into the car

As Dom helps his newlywed wife into the car, they briefly glance at the photographer.  The look of total contentment on their faces is so precious. This is one of the pictures that first inspired me to create a font named after them.

I hope you enjoyed “attending” the wedding of Dom and Mary.

Interview on Besotted Brand Blog

Tristan B. of Besotted Brand was sweet enough to interview me on her blog today.  She is sharing the inspiration behind the making of my soon to be released DomLovesMary font with her readers.
It was created in memory of my in-laws, Dominic and Mary  Sementelli.

She created this lovely graphic from the pics I’ve posted about their love story.

I know Dom and Mary would both be thrilled.  I have no doubt they are both looking down and saying:

( actually Mary would do most of the talking:)

“What a nice girl.  Is she Italian?  She’s so sweet to interview you and put it on that internet thing for everyone to see.

Does she like pasta and sauce ?  Why don’t you have Michael make her some of my recipe and give it to her.

(She never did trust me with her sauce recipe:)

Oh, she doesn’t live nearby?

Well send her some “Pep” ( pepperoni) bread

or some “Stefanelli’s” ( the best chocolate ever…I call it my “crack”:).

Okay Mary, I’ll do that.

And Dom would chime in at the end with “Beautiful, Deb.”

Oh how I miss those voices .

Enjoy your weekend.

Best,

Debi

Dom Loves Mary font: “Dom-Cool, Calm and Collected”

With the nearing release of my new DomLovesMary font, I am sharing the story behind the couple that inspired this creation, my in-laws, Dominic and Mary Sementelli.

Yesterday’s post featured “Something about Mary”.  Today’s topic features : Dom- “Cool, Calm and Collected.”

Above is a picture of Dom, on the right, with friends.

Dominic was a handsome Italian man, smart and as cool as a cucumber.  He was so chill that his friends, as a joke, nicknamed him “Barney” (after Barney Oldfield who was a famous race car driver) because he drove so slow. The nickname stuck and, in later years, even his sons called him Barney.

That contrast is what first attracted Mary to him when she saw him while out on the town with friends.  She approached him!  He was taken with this beautiful, feisty girl. And soon after, they were spending all of their time together.

Dom with “Mary M”

Dom served in the army during World War II. His primary job was as a butcher.  So he could carve a turkey! Most pictures of him, pre-wedding , are from his days in Australia where he was stationed.  You gotta love the one by the plane:)

At that time, all of the planes had pin up girls painted on them with names that related to the girl.  This was one of the less racy ones:)

Although he didn’t know it, this plane had the name of his future wife on it.

After he came home he settled into a good job at the Post Office.  Then he met Mary and, as the saying goes, life would never be the same for this strong, quiet, gentle man.

DomLovesMary font: “Something about Mary”

My new DomLovesMary font is days away from being released!  Because it’s been created in memory of my in-laws, Dominic and Mary Sementelli, I thought I’d share some things about these two people who were an incredible blessing in my life.

Today, it’s “Something about Mary”.

Mary was, in Texas terms, a “hoot”.  She was all of 4’11” in heels but commanded a room like she was six feet tall

Mary, top left, with her girls at the beach.

Born in New York, she eventually moved to Erie, Pennsylvania.  She had gal pals galore that she stayed friends with all of her life.

Mary, on the left, with her girls at “Lorenzo’s” night club.

In their single years, they loved to to  go to night clubs with that cool 40″s vibe like “The Town Casino”, “Lorenzo’s” and “The Chez Ami” in nearby Buffalo, New York.  Dressed to the nines , they’d have cocktails and dance to the music of great bands.

On one of those occasions, she was intrigued with a strong, handsome man named Dominic.  He was her opposite to be sure.  The strong, silent type, he didn’t like the spot light on him.  But he loved her spunky personality and was happy to let her shine.

After several years of courting,  she was finally ready to settle down.  She was 30 years old, unusual for that time.  But she had waited for the best:)

Mary always had great taste and was always thinking ahead.  She purchased this Heywood Wakefield bedroom suite, that now resides in the guest room of our home, a year before her marriage.

On  September 6, 1953, on the arm of her brother, she entered  St. Paul’s Catholic Church in the “little Italy” section of the city to marry Dominic Sementelli, the love of her life.

Thirty one years later, Michael and I said our vows there as well.

Tomorrow, “Dom, The Strong Silent Type. ”

DIY Personalized Halloween Pumpkins

Here’s my latest batch of decorated Halloween pumpkins!  If you remember the pic from a previous post showing personalized pumpkins, these were created for the same family.

It’s also the same client that I created the Halloween birthday invitations for using the mummy cookies in black  coffins.

Which is why I thought the spider web theme would work well.

pumpkins, Decorated pumpkins, Pumpkins with calligraphy, calligraphy, hand lettering

Here’s the DIY Instructions and supplies: You’ll need regular acrylic paint for the background and gloss acrylic paint for the lettering, and gloss yellow green paint for the spider and bat eyes, a pencil, a few different sized brushes and transfer paper.

( If you want to create this style of lettering, you’ll need a 1/2″ flat brush.)

Old English lettering download, calligraphy, hand lettering, free lettering download

1. Copy and Save the image of the lettering style above and follow the arrows to create the strokes needed to make the letters.

If you are not comfortable trying to do the lettering yourself, you can trace the letters above. Or use a font to create the names in Microsoft Word.  Here’s a link to some free fonts that would work well: Ghoulish, Nightmare, Rocky would all be good choices.

(To download, click on the apple icon for a Mac and the Windows Icon for PC.  If you don’t know how to add a font to your PC- just Google the question.)

2. Once you’ve created the names either by tracing or printing from your computer, make sure they will easily fit on to the pumpkin of your choice.

3. Using a pencil, draw the background design around the are where the name will go. Make sure the name will fit inside the area. I used bats and spider webs for my backgrounds.

4. Using regular acrylic paint, fill in the background area  with a large brush.

5. Once the paint dries, tape the piece of paper with the name on it onto the pumpkin.  Using transfer paper, which can be purchased at any craft store, trace the letters onto the pumpkin.

6. Paint the letters with gloss acrylic paint using an appropriate size brush. Add spiders, webbing, and eyes as needed.

That’s it!

Enjoy this beautiful fall day!

Save the Date in “DomLovesMary” font

I was so excited to receive this Save the Date using my soon to be released calligraphy font, “DomLovesMary”.

I created the lettering for my friend’s daughter Ashley to test out the font.

This cursive font was created in memory of my in-laws Dominic and Mary Sementelli.  They had a beautiful life together and were truly made for each other.

This font family will contain two different fonts that are, like them, literally “made for each other”. There are three different versions of the alphabet bundled together in the Pro version or sold separately.

In addition, there are two sets of flourishes that can be used as embellishments or to make a letter “fancier” as I did for the “A, l,y and S,t,n” in this Save the Date.  I’ve also designed a special set of decorated “Add on words” ( like “and, of, for, from, RSVP, Respond, Directions, Accomodations, etc…) that can easily be placed into a design.

So designers and DIY brides will have all they need to create beautiful calligraphy wedding invitations!

It will be released next week on myfonts.com on my Correspondence Ink foundry page.
