Beautiful Calligraphy Fonts by Stephen Rapp

I’m excited to share this newly released calligraphy font, Slapjack, created by the fabulously talented Stephen Rapp. I’m a HUGE fan of his work!

Slapstick has a very versatile look. It would look beautiful on an invitation for a wedding or other event.

Or be a perfect fit for a logo or retail packaging. I could definitely see this on a wine label.

I am in love with that “h” !! And he did an incredible job with the all caps look.

Clear and readable yet stylish.

Here’s a little more about this versatile font.

Slapjack is a unique rendition of a broad-edged calligraphic script ideal for packaging, signage, and titling. With a glyph count well over 700, Slapjack is a fully-featured pro font. Using Adobe InDesign which supports Stylistic Sets allows you to instantly convert your text to a version without baseline connectors for a more streamlined look. It’s so cool how you can choose to have a connected or non-connected look. It really changes the feel.

I had the pleasure of meeting Stephen in person and found him to be extremely humble for such a talented lettering artist as well as a truly kind hearted and gentle man.

I think his work beautifully represents those qualities.

Here’s a little bit about Stephen:

Lettering and typography are his passion. He’s studied and practiced lettering and type design for over 2 decades. He was a recipient of the Hermann Zapf Scholarship Award in 1997 and has been a lettering artist and type developer for American Greetings since 2000.

Some of his accolades include:

Published in Letter Arts Review, Scripsit, Bound and Lettered, the recently released “Modern Mark Making” by Quarry books, and Typography 30 by The Type Directors Club.

He has taught classes and workshops on both calligraphy and lettering and has been a faculty member at the International Lettering Arts Conference and Typecon.

In addition to his work with American Greetings, Stephen designs commercially available fonts for P22, Veer, and MyFonts.

I’m delighted to know such a great designer and human being.

Table Numbers and Place Cards in Calligraphy fonts

I was creating some samples for a potential client and thought I’d share these Table Numbers and Place Cards in my calligraphy fonts.

In the pic above I used my cursive font, Dom Loves Mary Stylistic version. The flourish on the capital T was created using a flourish from the Dom Loves Mary Flourishes Two set.

I used Dom Loves Mary text font for “TABLE 12” on the place card.

And in this pic, I’ve used my Belluccia font and Borders.

Here’s an example using Hand lettering. Using a Calligraphy font gives you the beautiful look of hand lettering at a fraction of the cost.

That’s why I created them!

With either Belluccia or Dom Loves Mary, you can easily design all of your event signage and print off your own computer.

Free Giveaway Chalkboard Sign: Just Married

Today’s Free Printable Chalkboard sign is….drum roll please:) Just Married!

If you want to enlarge this sign to fit on the back of a car or truck (or wherever) FedEx Kinko’s can enlarge it to the desired size.

They can also laminate it and/or back it with foam core to stabilize it.

Or if you’re feeling crafty, have an enlarged print made and cut out the letters to make a stencil.

Be sure to leave some pieces of paper connected to each other in totally enclosed areas so it doesn’t create a space where you don’t want it to be. For instance, in the big loop of the “M”.

Purchase an aerosol can of Marking Chalk (normally used for sports fields) from Ace Hardware or Dick’s Sporting Goods. Or colored Spray Chalk at a place online like Toolup.com.

Use the sign as a stencil to temporarily place the saying on the concrete or grass at a location where guests can see it!

I haven’t tried this yet but have seen it done online. I’ll try to find and post tomorrow.

How to use Dom Loves Mary Calligraphy font flourishes

A few people have asked me to demonstrate how to use the Dom Loves Mary Calligraphy font flourishes. So I made my very first screen recording! It only took 4 tries:)

I’ve uploaded it to my You Tube channel. Hope it helps explain some things about the font and how the flourishes fit with the upper and lower case letters. Click on the link to view it.

Since this is the first of many tutorials that I’ll be making, I’d appreciate some feedback about what I did well and what I could do differently.

I really want to get better at this, so your comments would be greatly appreciated!

Yesterday, I talked about the workshop I attended with Barbara Close. But I forgot to share the great gifts each attendee received.

They were handcrafted by Jeri Wright and Sherry Barber, Kaligrafos members who put the workshop together. They are both wonderful calligraphers and so creative and crafty.

They made one of these for each of us and placed themt on the doors of our rooms. ( It’s was a sleep over workshop:)

These smaller “Welcome” signs were placed at each place at the table.

For both items, they used a combination of wood, wire, beads and paint and lovingly hand made each one.

It really added to the warm feeling of the weekend.

Dom Loves Mary calligraphy font is launched!

Thanks to all for following the love story of my in-laws, Dominic and Mary Sementelli. I’m thrilled that my “Dom Loves Mary” calligraphy font, created in their memory, has finally been launched on Myfonts.com!

This week, I’ll be showing you some of the features of the font that I created specifically with weddings in mind.

The first thing I want to highlight is the special package of 66 ADD ON words. Some of the projects these can be used for are: invitations, envelope addressing, programs, Bride and Groom signs, Thank you tags and note cards.

Today, I’m going to show you the cool ways you can use it for envelope addressing.

I included ” deliver to” and embellished titles ( Mr. and Mrs.( as seen above), Mr. Miss, Ms, Doctor, The Doctors ) to add a special touch to your envelopes. In this sample, I used a combination of both the Dom Loves Mary SCRIPT CONTEXTUAL and TEXT fonts, as well as additional letter flourishes, that come in two sets of 72 each.

I had so much fun creating all the different options, I just couldn’t stop myself!

This sample was created using mostly the SCRIPT fonts ( A combination of STYLISTIC and STANDARD) with just the city and state in the TEXT font along with added flourishes on some of the letters in the names. One of my favorites is the abbreviation for number (No.). I think it looks really cool when used for Apartment numbers:)

DomLovesMary font: The Honeymoon

Today, some pics from Dom and Mary on their honeymoon.

The newlyweds headed south to Miami, Florida. I love the classic 1950’s suit Mary’s wearing in this picture. She was always stylish and loved to dress up for every occasion with coordinated jewelry, shoes and purse.

This picture of Dom has special meaning. He was a very “chill” guy. When he retired, he would spend a lot of time taking naps outside in his lawn chair, often with his face covered to keep out the light.

Because they lived on a corner lot, this scene was easily viewed by passers by. People he knew would honk and Dom, without taking the cover off his face, would raise his hand and wave.

He was like a “Sphinx” in the neighborhood 🙂

There weren’t a lot of photos from their honeymoon. This is the only shot I could find with both of them in the picture. I love it because of the way Mary is jumping into the pool while Dom waits for her. To me, it represents them “taking the plunge” in marriage.

It might seem odd to post this picture with the top of Dom’s head cut off in the photo. But it makes me giggle to see that even then, as it was throughout her life, Mary could never take a photo that included the person’s full head!

Dom and Mary would eventually make a routine, especially after Dom’s retirement from the Post Office, of spending the winter in Florida. They’d come to Dallas to be with us at Christmas then head off to their escape from the cold returning to Erie around April.

Save the Date in “DomLovesMary” font

I was so excited to receive this Save the Date using my soon to be released calligraphy font, “DomLovesMary”.

I created the lettering for my friend’s daughter Ashley to test out the font.

This cursive font was created in memory of my in-laws Dominic and Mary Sementelli. They had a beautiful life together and were truly made for each other.

This font family will contain two different fonts that are, like them, literally “made for each other”. There are three different versions of the alphabet bundled together in the Pro version or sold separately.

In addition, there are two sets of flourishes that can be used as embellishments or to make a letter “fancier” as I did for the “A, l,y and S,t,n” in this Save the Date. I’ve also designed a special set of decorated “Add on words” ( like “and, of, for, from, RSVP, Respond, Directions, Accomodations, etc…) that can easily be placed into a design.

So designers and DIY brides will have all they need to create beautiful calligraphy wedding invitations!

New Calligraphy Font

This is a sample of my new calligraphy font, DomLovesMary, that will be released within the next week!!

It’s been a long time in the making ( since May) so I am very excited to share it with you.
